Get Ready for Short Run

Short Run is Saturday, November 30th in Seattle. This is one of my favorite small press shows.

I'll be there, sharing a table with Gridlords/Sean Christensen ABT.

I will have:

  • Another weirdly timed life event: my first (or second, depending on how you define it) minicomic! Either way, I’m continuing my tradition of doing things backwards
  • My zine It’s Snowing Down South which debuted last year at Short Run (which some people would call a minicomic, see above)
  • Copies of the Cocktail Hour series of books from Scout Books, in which I have some drink recipes
  • Original paintings and prints, some you are tired of looking at, and others that you haven’t ever seen before!
  • Crafting’s last hurrah
Also, I have a comic in the Short Run anthology On Your Marks, which looks like it’s going to be great.

Also, my tablemate will be doing a performance at 2:10 that you probably don’t want to miss.

Also, also, also

Three Things

ONE As mentioned below by Bishakh, the Graphic Canon Volume 3 is now available. I have a one-page illustration of the Donald Barthelme story “I Bought a Little City.” There are loads of talented artists in this one, including T Edward Bak, Juliacks, Cole Johnson, Matt Wiegle, Lauren Weinstein, Onsmith, David Lasky, R. Sikoryak, Robert Goodin, Trevor Alixopulos, Ellen Lindner, Mardou, Julia Gfrörer, and our own Bishakh Som, to mention a few of my favorites. It also debuted at #4 on the New York Times’ list of bestselling Paperback Graphic Books.

TWO The Big Feminist But is out, edited by our own Joan Reilly along with Shannon O’Leary and Suzanne Kleid, and it includes a collaborative story I did with Jesse Reklaw. I have mixed feelings and zero perspective on my contribution at this moment, but I can say that there are some really good stories by people such as Lauren Weinstein, Vanessa Davis and Trevor Alixopulos, Ron Rege Jr, Dylan Williams, Corinne Mucha, Gabrielle Bell and more. This, in my opinion, is the right kind of concept for an anthology about feminism. There’s also a nice review at Paste Magazine.

THREE The second set of three books in The Cocktail Hour series is here, with a few recipes by your friend Andrice (me). These three are illustrated by Jeremy Tinder, Gemma Correll, and Dilraj Mann. This time around it’s Whiskey, Tequila and Brandy.

The Log Lady is made with whiskey, fresh blackberries, maple syrup and smoked salt

Runner Runner

It’s only sort of true that I don’t do comics anymore. No, actually it’s not true at all. But most of what I’ve been doing recently is still hiding from the world, waiting till it’s ready. Believe me, it’s not nearly ready. Oh no, wait, that makes it seem like I’m working on like a 250-page graphic novel or something. That is not the case. Anyway, irrespective of what I’m doing or not doing right now, here is a small piece of evidence that I’ve been doing some things recently. It’s a full-color one-page comic for the back cover of Runner Runner, Tugboat Press’s annual free comic book. You can get it during Free Comic Book Day at a bunch of stores (listed on Tugboat’s website). There’s some other lovely stuff in there, including but not limited to work by Corinne Mucha, Sean Christensen ABT, Julia Gfrörer and Greg Means himself.

I also just learned something from the Tugboat website: Runner Runner is named after a poker term and not, as I always thought, after Logan’s Run. I guess then it would have been “Runner! Runner!” or maybe nobody even said “runner!” twice in a row in Logan’s Run.

Free Comic Book Day is this Saturday, May 4.

Taurus Time

So maybe I’ve been looking at too many sci-fi paperback covers from the ’70s lately. Whatever, I think maybe it’s OK. I’m also super excited to be OIL PAINTING again! I’ve been thinking about it for quite a while, and this show seemed like a good opportunity to pull out my box of oil paints that I haven’t opened since I moved to Portland. I did these on Arches oil paper, which I think is a new product, and I’m really into it. It has a similar texture to nice printmaking paper, and allegedly you can paint straight on it with oils and it’s still archival.
